WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS: How Poetry Shaped the American Narrative is a dynamic literary and cultural discussion exploring the powerful role poetry has played in shaping the ideals, conflicts, identity and collective memory of the United States. Presented as part of the BARD & Broadside: North Central Florida Poetry Festival, this program invites community members, poets, artists, historians and cultural thinkers to examine how poetry has reflected and influenced the American experience from America's founding to the present day.
For more than 250 years, poetry has served as both witness and participant in the American story. From the revolutionary ideals of the nation’s founding to the ongoing struggles for freedom, equality and justice, poets have given language to the hopes and contradictions of democracy. Through verse, metaphor and narrative imagination, poetry has helped Americans interpret their past, challenge their present and envision their future."
