We gather on the homelands and waters of the Lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples. We acknowledge their stewardship of the lands and waters & their ongoing resistance to colonization. Music and sharing songs together can be vehicle for decolonizing as both a means to develop community and an organizing and solidarity-building tool to take decolonial action. Singing together nurtures our spirits that are too often alienated by racial capitalism.
We Have to Sing’ is a workshop intended to explore, create, and invigorate the musical tradition within the working class struggle.
United We Sing is a labour choir that you may have seen in so-called Victoria at the Cascadia picket line, in the BCGEU union hall, or at the Labour Day picnic. Our choir is open to all workers, unionized & non-unionized.
We’re apart of the South Island Workers Culture & Education League (SIWCEL), a newly formed group which seeks to “build connections and solidarity between workers through culture, community care & education”.
What to Expect:
- Spiral beach is accessed where Cook St. meets Dallas Road via a ramp and staircase. Look for a group with guitar(s).
- No previous musical experience is required. Come use your voice!
- If you play an acoustic instrument, please bring them along.
- Before singing each song, we discuss the history and content of the songs and ways to modify or adapt the lyrics.
