About this Event
We Are Still Here, The Taino Lives! presents new perspectives, narratives and scientific research regarding the history of the people of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Directed by Ermelinda Cortés, this New York Foundation for the Arts-sponsored documentary film encompasses a decade of research and features interviews with Taino elders and leading scholars from the National Museum of the American Indian to the University of Puerto Rico – Mayaguez. The 61-minute film received an Excellence Award at the 2016 Rincón International Film Festival in Puerto Rico. Join us for a screening followed by a presentation and conversation with the director.
Ermelinda Cortés is a filmmaker and artist who exhibits in the United States, Europe, Canada and Puerto Rico. Ermelinda’s paintings and illustrations harmonize her Asian/AfroLatinx culture with mathematics, literature, myth and fantasy. Her photography and films reflect her Taino ancestry and love of Puerto Rico, as well as the city of her birth – New York.
