About this Event
Ahmed Alnaouq is a Palestinian journalist and human rights activist from Gaza. He is the co-founder of and director of We Are Not Numbers, a platform for emerging young writers and creators from Palestine. Ahmed is also a journalist with Palestine Deep Dive.
This event will take place to mark the paperback release of Ahmed's acclaimed book We Are Not Numbers, a moving, immersive and humanising collection of essays charting, in their own words, the daily lives, struggles and dreams of young people in Gaza.
The hardback version of the book reached No.5 in the Sunday Times bestseller chart in its first week of publication. It garnered wide endorsements from leading names in the worlds of the arts, politics and activism, including Naomi Klein, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Riz Ahmed, Motaz Azaiza, Kamila Shamsie, Monica Ali, Owen Jones and China Mieville to name a few.
This is a fantastic opportunity to meet Ahmed, to hear him tell his story and talk about the book. With the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the current escalation and widening of conflict in the Middle East, now is a more important time than ever to hear the voices of those being directly impacted.
These are the stories of young people born under Israeli occupation and blockade. They have endured unspeakable struggles and losses, and they keep fighting to be recognised not as numbers, but as human beings with hopes, dreams and lives worth living. In this collection, vital, urgent and full of heart, spanning over ten yeas to the present moment, we gain an unparalled insight into the past as well as the current and next generation of Palestinian leaders, artists and scholars - and imagine where we might go from here.
There will be paperback copies of the book available to buy on the night, as well as a book signing after the talk.
Refreshments (tea, coffee and soft drinks) are included in the price of the ticket.
