West Creek Reservation offers a wonderful mix of winter birding habitats, including mature oak stands, meadow edges, bramble patches, and the creek corridor. We’ll look for Red-headed Woodpecker, a striking species that breeds at this location during the summer and whose clan is regularly found here throughout winter. We’ve also had a Merlin sighting on this walk two years in a row, in the same stand of trees! Will we get lucky three years in a row? Barred Owl is possible in the wooded sections of the trail, and we’ll keep an eye on the broadcasting tower guy wires for Red-tailed Hawk. We’ll finish at the Watershed Stewardship Center’s feeders, which often host a lively mix of woodpeckers, finches, and sparrows.
