Join us to celebrate the launch of Wayne Wood’s newest book, Kenneth Treister – The Fusion of Architecture +Art, a comprehensive view of the life and work of Florida architect Kenneth Treister.
Kenneth Treister is a Florida architect and sculptor whose work is a dazzling synthesis of architecture and art. His avant-garde approach to creating sensuous environments with unconventional shapes and novel use of materials sets him apart from other designers. Surprisingly, his work is not widely known outside south Florida, where the majority of his career has taken place. This new book by Jacksonville architectural historian Wayne Wood is the first comprehensive monograph of Treister’s life and work and is lavishly illustrated with over 200 photos by the author and from Treister’s own personal archives.
An enormously talented sculptor as well as architect, Treister designed the furniture, art glass, light fixtures, landscaping, and decorations for many of his projects. His buildings are a prime example of Gesamtkunstwerk, the 19th-century German concept of creating a total work of art in which different art forms are combined to create a single cohesive whole. Treister’s designs have been described as “a cross between Frank Lloyd Wright, Antoni Gaudi, Auguste Rodin, and the Mayans.”
Still remarkably creative at age 95, he is one of the oldest living architects who worked with Frank Lloyd Wright. His phenomenal body of work deserves recognition as one of America’s great organic architects.
