Discover the perfect waterwise or CA native plants for growing in pots, and learn what to do to make sure they thrive!
About this Event

There are so many great waterwise or California native plant choices perfect for growing in pots on patios, balconies, or anywhere growing in the ground is not an option. Container gardens can have dazzling beauty, lots of color, and provide resources for hummingbirds, butterflies, and pollinators.

But, growing these plants in containers requires a very different approach than growing in the ground, and there are many choices that will either set you up for success or ensure you are in for a struggle.

In this workshop we will teach you how to help your waterwise or native container plantings thrive by covering:

· Top waterwise or native plant choices for containers

· Choosing pots and other container options

· Choosing potting soil

· Watering by hand and setting up a container irrigation system

· How much sun? Where to place your containers

· Fertilizing, mulching, pest control

· Pruning and repotting

Each participant will be able to select a native wildflower seed packet of their choice to take home.

After the workshop concludes, for those who wish to stay, we will be offering a raffle give-away of some of our favorite waterwise California native plants. We will also tell you a bit about each one, why it is one of our favorites, and the garden situations in which it is likely thrive.

After the workshop we will have a variety of our favorite native or waterwise plants for containers available for sale at our Waterwise Community Nursery.

Our instructor for this workshop will be Scott Kleinrock, Conservation Programs Manager here at Chino Basin Water Conservation District and the Waterwise Community Center.

Scott has been working in horticulture for almost 20 years, focused on both the design and ongoing care of sustainable native or edible landscapes in Southern California at the residential and public garden scales. He has a master’s degree in landscape architecture for Cal Poly Pomona and was previously the Landscape Design and Planning Coordinator at the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens.
