About this Event

Join The Nature Conservancy volunteer, James Shelton, for an outing at Cumberland Marsh Preserve to view waterfowl and other bird species!

James has 16 years of experience with bird identification, serves as a Preserve Steward for Cumberland Marsh, has worked on National Breeding Bird Surveys, TNC surveys after controlled burns, and works in IT. He is an amateur nature photographer with over 2,500 species observations on iNaturalist. He speaks a little Spanish and French and can provide bird names in those languages for the trip!

Bald eagles, ospreys, great blue herons, and egrets, as well as wintering populations of black ducks, wood ducks, mallards and Canada geese are commonly seen at this preserve.

We will primarily be viewing from the boardwalk, which is about 100 feet away from the parking area. The boardwalk is about 4-ft wide, made of wood with metal mesh overtop to prevent slippery conditions, and is in two sections that each have a slope of grade of 8% and 11%. There is potential for hiking into the trails to check other view points for birds depending on interest from the group.

Please wear comfortable clothing, closed-toe shoes, and bring water/snacks. You are welcome to bring a camping chair if you would like! Binoculars will be helpful, we should have a couple extra pairs available if anyone needs.

If you have any questions, please contact Brynna Strand at [email protected].
