Washington State wines have long been a feature of the wine program at 1900. It’s not only that they perform above their price points (as the wine media consistently boasts), but we are strong believers in the style of wines the state produces. The alcohols are often more moderated than down south in California; the wines may be less overtly ripe in their flavors. For some, it’s as if Washington red wines exist between the richness of California and the structure of Bordeaux.Washington and Oregon represent most of the acreage of the Pacific Northwest but there’s vast diversity among the wines of those two states. While Oregon’s Willamette Valley has traditionally been focused upon Pinot Noir, Washington has always been willing to grow and make a wild assortment of grape varieties. Cabernets and Merlot grow well in the warmer sites, along with many Rhone grapes. White grapes used to dominate in the vineyards, and nearly disappeared in the 90s and 00s, but they are gaining attention now. And the Walla Walla Valley straddles both Washington and Oregon, with the vineyards roughly split between the two states.
