The Brenham Heritage Museum is privileged to be hosting Dr. Richard McCaslin for a lecture about Washington-on-the-Brazos in March, in honor of the same month the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed.On December 17, 2025, Governor Greg Abbott appointed Richard B. “Rick” McCaslin, Ph.D. as the Texas State Historian for a term set to expire on December 17, 2027. The State Historian is responsible for increasing public knowledge about the rich and diverse history of the state, encouraging the teaching of Texas history in public schools, consulting with state leaders to promote Texas history, and making presentations on Texas history topics.
The title of Dr. McCaslin's lecture will be: Washington-on-the-Brazos in the Civil War: The Dixie Blues in Hood's Texas Brigade.
Synopsis: During the Civil War, men from Washington-on-the-Brazos served in Company E of the Fifth Texas Infantry, known as the Dixie Blues. Assigned to Hood's Texas Brigade, they fought under the command of Robert E. Lee in almost every major battle in the eastern theater. Meanwhile, the Civil War took a heavy toll on their hometown, initiating a long decline from which it never recovered.
About the speaker: Richard B. McCaslin, Texas State Historian and Director of Publications for the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA), is the retired TSHA Professor of Texas History at the University of North Texas and the author or editor of twenty-one books, eight of which received awards. The list includes Lee in the Shadow of Washington, which won a Laney Prize and Slatten Award and was nominated for a Pulitzer. He has also published more than two dozen journal articles and book chapters, several of which have earned awards as well. A Fellow of the TSHA and Admiral in the Texas Navy, he has commendations from the Civil War Round Tables in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Shreveport for his academic work.
This event is open to the public but RSVPs are strongly encouraged. Admission to this lecture is $15 per person and can be paid at the door.
A Members-Only Reception will begin at 5pm at the museum.
The lecture will be from 6-7pm.
