About this Event
Warehouse Dancing @TheLab: Community Dance Party
The inaugural evening of Provo's newest dance club. Here's a word from the curator:
"I proudly announce to you, The Lab, a community dance night every other Thursday at The FIND Lab. When I met with the team behind the project, it was clear that we wanted to put the dancer at the center of the experience. This is not a showcase of DJs, this is a showcase of you. Plan to sweat.
It all starts this coming Thursday, the 15th of January, with the inaugural set starting at 7 PM. I am sure the early Thursday program comes across as unusual to some, but we’ve done this before and it works, at least for locals. This is also a part of the design! How can we expect anyone to dance after a time they would normally be asleep? A wide range of people and schedules can enjoy a timely night of dancing at The Lab and still get to bed on time.
For those who may be unfamiliar with The FIND Lab, their warehouse on Center St. in Provo is a newly opened space intended for hosting regularly programmed events around various art and media. A very talented local–Nick is his name–has installed a very robust soundsystem, sufficient for the grand space. Some have suggested that it gives the vibe of a church cultural hall, as if it were a stake dance. I find that amusing, and kind of perfect given many of our roots. The church is open to all.
There will be a small cover charge of $3 at the door, and I bring this up because I want to be forward about where this money is going. There are some costs associated with keeping the lights on and doors open at the FIND Lab, and this is to cover those basic costs. Outside of the $3 cover, however, there will be opportunities to donate to the party fund or tip individual DJs that you enjoy. We welcome all contributions with the understanding that this is a community supported initiative. Most work is completely volunteer.
Lastly–and most importantly for some of you–a quick note on the music. Utah Valley is home to an eclectic set of DJs and dance artists that represent a wide range of tastes. Those in the scene can remember nights when the music was all over the place; you never knew what style was coming next. Keeping the dancer in mind, The Lab hopes to change that through transparency about what is on the program. This way, community members can make informed decisions on if a set is right for them, or maybe they’ll want to try something new. Continue to expect a wide range of styles over the course of the season.
To conclude, I want to re-emphasize that the goal of this bi-weekly club night is community. This space is for you, and we want to design it around you. Please share your thoughts and ideas with us as we get this going. This is your chance to be a part of something special; a part of a legend in the making. We may reminisce about this season in a later chapter of our lives. What kinds of stories will we create together?
I will see you on the dancefloor."
