WAR AND REDEMPTION: music and readings from The Just Vengeance
About this Event
WAR AND REDEMPTION
An 80th anniversary programme of readings from Dorothy L Sayers’s 1946 play The Just Vengeance, together with the original music composed by Antony Hopkins, presenter of the long-running radio programme Talking about Music.
The choir will be directed by Aric Prentice, Director of Music, and accompanied by the Cathedral Organist, Jeffrey Makinson. Extracts from the play will be read by members of the Dorothy L Sayers Society. The programme will last about an hour.
The story opens when an Airman is shot down and finds himself welcomed into the community of his home city. He is a modern man who believes in progress and the power of individuals to work out their own salvation. But when the community enacts the story of Christian salvation, he finds a faith and offers himself at the foot of the Cross.
The first performance in Lichfield Cathedral lasted three hours and was attended by the late Queen Mother. Our presentation uses short extracts read by seven actors, and is accompanied by the original music.
