Join guest speaker Dr Gerard McKeever for a foray into the regional aspects of Sir Walter Scott's writing, at 7.30pm, Tuesday 21st April, in the Ormiston Institute, Melrose. All welcome. Admission £6.More details:
On a July Saturday in 1832, a young woman by the name of Miss Briarcleff borrowed a novel from her local library in Galloway, and kept it out for just under month. The novel was Walter Scott’s 'Guy Mannering; or, The Astrologer', just one example of the many books Miss Briarcleff borrowed from what was known as the Wigtown Subscription Library, founded in the town in 1795.
This talk, drawing on Dr McKeever’s latest book 'Regional Romanticism: Literature and Southwest Scotland, c. 1770–1830', will use library records to explore the distinctively regional qualities of Scott’s writing and what it meant to ordinary people in Scotland.
