One of the largest urban wetland nature reserves in Europe, and particularly important for wildlife due to its position within the lower Lee Valley. Ten reservoirs with varied wetland habitats, including islands, dense scrub-lined banks and reedbed, offer a haven for overwintering wildfowl.
Kingfisher and Peregrine resident. A wide range of water birds expected. A good opportunity to add birds to your 2025 year tick list!
Morning walk: Meet at 10.45am. The morning walk is about 1.5 miles and open to all and will explore one side of the site.
Eat in the cafe or bring a packed lunch.
Afternoon walk (prebooking essential - booking opens on 1 December): Leave at 130pm for a free guided walk by reserve staff who will take us to areas not normally open to the public. Limited to 20 people so prebook by emailing Jane (after 1 December) on [email protected]. Priority will be given to members and regulars of our Group.
Alternatively, you can explore the public areas of the site yourself during the afternoon.
Finish by 4pm when the reserve closes.
Meeting point: Near Reception, The Engine House Visitor Centre, 2 Forest Road, London N17 9NH What3Words: dwell.desks.salad. Grid reference: TQ349892
Public transport: 1.25hrs by public transport. Take the train to Finsbury Park then Victoria line to Tottenham Hale. £25 (without railcard) as we go to press. 5-10 minutes walk to the reserve.
Once the winter timetable is published, we will advise on a specific fast train to catch if you wish to travel with the group.
Note: if there’s planned engineering work or other issues on the rail network, we may switch the date or venue.
Parking: We encourage you to use public transport. Small car park on site (inside ULEZ).
Facilities: 2 hides, infinite number of viewpoints. Visitor Centre, cafe, toilets at The Engine House. Picnic area
Distances and accessibility: Loops between 1.5 and 2.2 miles. Flat site apart from two reservoirs with high banks reached by steps. The main concrete pathways through the site are accessible. Other paths on the wetlands site are dirt track so may be uneven or muddy in places.
Admission charges: No admission charge to reserve but donations appreciated.
