About this Event
This event is entry by donation and is designed to raise awareness about Saqchahim's work, while supporting the corresponding fundraiser in a community-oriented space. Our fundraiser can be found here!
In collaboration with Supporters of Saqchahim and with guidance from Dr. Juanita Sundberg, we are students in a specialized geography seminar titled Social Movements in the Americas. In this class (GEOG 495), we, as upper-year undergraduate students, are learning about international solidarity movements and working with Supporters of Saqchahim as a community partner to explore the practical applications of solidarity in action. Members of Saqchahim share their perspectives on globalization, internationalism, and land reclamation with students, drawing on their lived experiences.
This year, we are aiming to provide the community with funding to build communal wash basins, known locally as 'piletas.' These sinks are used to wash clothes and laundry, store water, and wash and clean food such as maize. Supporting this project means supporting infrastructure that directly improves everyday well-being, strengthens community resilience, and responds to needs identified by Saqchahim itself. Moreover, the Piletas are important for creating spaces where women meet and support each other, which de-individualizes domestic care work and reduces alienation. Also, it creates space for conversation and organizing, which in turn creates possibilities for building worlds otherwise.
