WALKING TOUR: O Soho Mio
About this Event
O Soho Mio: The Italian community in London
Both Soho and Clerkenwell will forever hold memories of my Italian grandfather, who became a part of the Italian community here after moving to the UK from Abruzzo in Italy in the 1950s. As a family, we would purchase produce from I Camisa & Son and pick up cakes from the Amalfi restaurant on Old Compton Street (sadly, both no longer there) and spend Sunday mornings travelling over to St.Peter's Italian Church on Clerkenwell Road for a quick drink at Casa Italiana, the club which still feels like a beautiful step back in time. This tour is a celebration of this Italian community, its contribution to London and how it fostered a sense of belonging for Italian immigrants.
The route will highlight important Italian establishments along the way, beginning at Bar Italia and encompassing Quo Vadis, Lina Stores, Bocca di Lupo and Gelupo, discussing Italian-influenced pieces of architecture including Central Saint Giles and finishing at London's old 'Little Italy' in Clerkenwell.
Please note that the tour is a work-in-progress and will be delivered as a 'rehearsed reading'.
