About this Event
Thank you for your interest in participating in our walk campaign, Walking the Southern Roads to Freedom. The walk will be approximately 65 miles over a 7-day period. During the walk we will have the opportunity to visit historic sites, including those known to have been visited by freedom-seekers. At the end of each day, there will be presentations and discussions. Participants can join in during segments of any walk and at locations where breaks are taken. When reserving your spot, please indicate which leg(s) of the walk you plan to attend by picking those dates as your "ticket." Thanks to our generous sponsors, there is no charge to participate in the event.
The average walking speed will be about 3 miles per hour. Those who sign up will be provided a daily schedule. On the longer distance days, we will begin walking earlier. For short distance days, we may not start until the late afternoon. There will be breaks during each leg for food, water, and rest.
Below is the information for each of the 7 legs of the walk. Remember- you can decide which days you'd like to participate in. You do not have to complete the entire walk. We'd love to have you even just for one day!

To safely walk long distances, staying hydrated is extremely important.
1. Drink water even if you don’t feel thirsty
2. Consider sports drinks like Gatorade for heavy sweating
3. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill often
4. Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing made from breathable wicking fabric
5. Protect your head with a wide-brimmed hat
6. Wear sunglasses
7. Wear bandana or cooling towels around neck and on forehead
8. Pace your walk and listen to your body. Any sign of headache, nausea, or
dizziness is a sign of heat exhaustion, and you must stop walking immediately.
Hydrate and rest before continuing.
9. Merino wool socks because of its breathability and moisture wicking qualities.
10. Wear comfortable shoes with traction and a wide toe box.
