In this participatory salon we’ll explore the 4,000-year history of labyrinths, an ancient form found in cultures around the world with some astonishing similarities despite geographical distance. We’ll sip tea and play with line drawings of labyrinth ‘seeds’ and the surprising mathematical possibilities that grow from them, and also explore the beauty of magic squares and their potential connections. Together we’ll create a large-scale labyrinth in chalk on the floor and will walk and dance this ancient path meditatively and playfully, experiencing the ways these mysterious patterns affect us. With live music, tea & lanterns!
Presented by mathematical artists and musicians Susan Gerofsky, Helen Lambourne and Amanda Fritzlan.

About the presenters:
Susan Gerofsky is a UBC professor in math education, working with embodied ways to learn mathematics through the arts and outdoors. She is active as a poet, playwright, musician and filmmaker, and works with dance and fibre arts. She is the Squire of Tiddley Cove Morris Dancers and a member of Sospiro Misterioso, playing acoustic traditional music from Canada and Europe. You'll often find her cycling around town with a baritone horn or an accordion.
Helen Lambourne has been bringing together visual art and music in the elementary classroom for over a dozen years. She plays instruments both large and small, and loves to sketch wherever she goes.
Amanda Fritzlan is a teacher of middle school students and student teachers. She has a PhD in mathematics education and is interested in connections between mathematics, science, visual arts, and place. She is happiest outdoors and adores gardening.
Secret Headquarters is gratefully situated on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. We honor, respect, and give thanks to our hosts.
