About this Event

Walk the Line: Cowes to Newport - 5 miles

Discover the history of the Cowes to Newport railway on this walk beside the Medina estuary. On the way we'll look out for the remains of Cowes tunnel, Mill Hill station and the once extensive sidings at Medina Wharf.

Length of walk: 5 miles (approx 2.5 hours)

Walk Leader: Steven Backhouse

Walk Cost: Voluntary donation requested for the Isle of Wight Steam railway Ashey Station Appeal. £5 donation in cash on the day please.

Type of Walk: Linear

Start Location: Outside Marks & Spencer, Terminus Road, Cowes, PO31 7XH. (SZ 495960)

Finish Location: Newport quayside, PO30 5BW (SZ 501893)

The walk is generally a good surface throughout; though the approach to Cowes tunnel can be muddy.

Pace of Walk: Moderate - This walk will follow a moderate pace.

Walk grade: Fairly Easy - Gentle, rolling landscape, walking on paths with good to average surfaces. Some walking on gentle inclines, some stiles or steps to be expected en route.

Mobility level: Suitable for a person with restricted walking ability and for those that may need to use a wheelchair some of the time.

  • Good walking footwear recommended
  • Family friendly
