Walk Summary:
Distance: 5.3miles / 8.5km
Meeting Point: Rhyd Ddu Car Park, near Rhyd Ddu, Beddgelert.
Pace: Gentle, mindful, inclusive. Nobody left behind!
This is a lovely walk to celebrate the changing colours of autumn. We will encounter two lakes, mixed woodlands, and plenty of bird life. This walk is suitable for beginners who are comfortable with being on their feet for around three and a half hours (with plenty of rests). We will mostly be on well-maintained, solid forest tracks, with our final descent over grass which may be wet and muddy. Please read the full description below!
We will begin our walk at the Rhyd Ddu car park off the A4085. Parking is £3 for up to 4 hours, or £6 all day. There are toilets here and a water refill station.
We will cross over the Llyn y Gadair causeway and enter Parygadair, a pretty, mixed woodland on the lakeshore. Here, the paths are solid, even and fairly flat.
Following the well-maintained forest track, we will then go further into the woods on a gentle incline, followed by a gentle decline towards Llyn Llywelyn. The lake is manmade and home to trout, eels, and waterfowl. We will pause here for lunch and a rest with a lovely view.
We will then begin a fairly gentle climb to the highest point of our walk along well maintained tracks. This incline will take roughly 15 minutes to climb, and we will take it slowly to suit everybody.
At the top of the forest we will enjoy views across to Yr Wyddfa massif, and we may spot the Welsh Highland Railway steam trains on the valley floor.
We then leave the forest and enter grassland on the foothills of Y Garn. This section is our descent, which begins gently and becomes steeper as we go. Underfoot, the path is mostly of grass with some stoned sections. It can get muddy in places here, so we will take the descent slowly and carefully.
We will cross a small stream at the bottom of a waterfall. There are informal, natural stepping stones across the river (which were not slippery at all when I crossed), but will require a little confidence and sure-footedness to navigate. If it’s a little too intimidating, we can follow the river a few meters downhill and cross there on level, even ground. However, the water here is a little deeper (around 10cm) so may result in wet feet if your shoes aren’t waterproof!
We then pass through a farm gate and re-join flat land before crossing the road back to the carpark.
There are no stiles or kissing gates along the route.
Sturdy footwear is required for this walk.
If you have poles, you may wish to carry them with you to help during the stream crossing. You are welcome to borrow mine too!
The car park serves as a starting point for a popular route up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) so it can get busy quickly. On-road parking in the nearby village of Rhyd-Ddu can be used if the car park is full.
