Maryland's official state exercise is walking. It was designated as such by the state legislature on October 1, 2008, making Maryland the first state in the nation to have an official state exercise. The designation recognizes walking for its health benefits and its importance to the state's transportation and recreation networks, and it is celebrated annually with Walk Maryland Day.
