About this Event

On Saturday 4th July there will be a botonical tour of the wildflower grasslands adjacent to Poulton Hall. The parkland consists of a 3.5 acre wildflower meadow enclosed by nearly 400 metres of nine species hedgerow, which links four copses to make a wildlife corridor between two areas of woodland. The nine native species, chosen to provide flowers and fruits and winter cover, are: hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel, alder, dog rose, guelder rose, oak, beech and holly. It is sometimes grazed by rare breed sheep. The hedgerow has been laid by Wirral Countryside Volunteers , with some plants left to grow into standard hedgerow trees. The meadow s mown annually and the cuttings removed. Finer grasses have now taken over, yellow rattle is well-established, and marsh-orchids are thriving. If the sun is out look for meadow brown butterflies. Although previously a potato field it now it taking on the characteristics of a typical Cheshire Meadow. You will be guided through the meadow by an experienced botanist, Dr Hilary Ash, who will introduce you to the species found within this meadow how to identify them and further stories about these plants.
