About this Event

Mae’r ganolfan geo-wleidyddiaeth yn cynnal sesiwn banel ar ddyfodol cyfansoddiadol y Ddeyrnas Unedig yn y pum mlynedd nesaf – caiff y digwyddiad ei gynnal ar y 15fed Ionawr 2026 o 9:30yb i 15:00yh yn adeilad y Pierhead ym Mae Caerdydd. Mae’r digwyddiad yn rhan o raglen ehangach y ganolfan: Undeb y DU, prosiect sydd yn archwilio hanes yr ynysoedd hyn, gan ddod ac academyddion, gwleidyddion, a llunwyr polisi ynghyd i drafod sut gall ei berthnasau cyfansoddiadol esblygu yn y dyfodol.

Bydd y digwyddiad yn canolbwyntio ar rôl hanesyddol Cymru o fewn y DU, sut mae’r berthynas honno yn newid a sut bu’n parhau i esblygu dros y bum mlynedd nesaf. Bydd y digwyddiad yn cynnwys dau brif banel: Y cyntaf yn archwilio hanes geo-wleidyddiaeth yng Nghrymu a’r ail yn dadansoddi’r heriau sy’n wynebu’r Ddeyrnas Unedig a datblygiad rôl Cymru yn niogelwch Ewrop.

Dr Hugo Bromley, Cymrawd Ymchwil Hanes Cymhwysol, Canolfan Geolwleidyddiaeth

Panel 2—Cymru, Undeb y DU a Diogelwch Ewrop Cadeirydd: , cynorthwyydd ymchwil, Canolfan Geo-wleidyddiaeth

Yr Athro Laura McAllister, Athro Polisi Cyhoeddus a Llywodraethiant Cymru, Prifysgol Caerdydd

Dr Alistair Shepherd, Uwch Ddarlithydd Diolgewlch Ewropeaidd, Prifysgol Aberystwyth

Mae’r DU wedi wynebu nifer o heriau geo-wleidyddol cymhleth drwy gydol ei hanes. Nid yw’r gorffennol agos na’r presennol yn eithriad i hynny. Gyda’r arolygon yn awgrymu y bydd newidiadau pellach yn nhirwedd wleidyddol Cymru, dyma gyfle i lunwyr polisi ac academyddion ystyried ei ddyfodol. Er mwyn cynnal sgyrsiau o’r math hyn, mae’n rhaid cydnabod y cyd-destun presennol sydd ohoni a’r cyfleodd a’r heriau geowleidyddol Ewropeaidd a fyd-eang.

The Centre for Geopolitics is holding a panel event on the constitutional future of the United Kingdom over the next five years on 15th January 2026 from 09:30am to 15:00pm in the Senedd’s Pierhead Building in Cardiff Bay. The event is part of the Centre’s UK Union Programme, a project exploring the longer history of these isles, and bringing academics, politicians and policymakers together to discuss how its constitutional relationships could evolve in future.

The event will focus both on Wales’ historical role within the UK and how that relationship is changing and how it could evolve further over the next five years. The event will revolve around two main panels: one examining the history of Welsh geopolitics and another exploring the challenges facing the UK and the development of Wales’ role in European security.

Panel 1—The history of Welsh geopolitics Chair: Dr Barnabas Szabo, Research Associate, Centre for Geopolitics

Professor Lloyd Bowen, Professor of Early Modern History, Cardiff University

Dr Rhun Emlyn, Lecturer in History and Welsh History, Aberystwyth University

Dr Hugo Bromley, Applied History Research Fellow, Centre for Geopolitics

Panel 2—Wales, the UK Union and European security Chair: Jack Liddall, Research Assistant, Centre for Geopolitics

Professor Laura McAllister, Professor of Public Policy and the Governance of Wales, Cardiff University

Dr Alistair Shepherd, Senior Lecturer in European Security, Aberystwyth University

Ffion Thomas, Deputy Director, International Relations and Overseas Network, Welsh Government

The UK has faced many complex geopolitical challenges throughout its history. The recent past and the present day are no exception. Now, with polls indicating a changing political landscape in Wales, there is an opportunity for policymakers and academics to consider its future. These conversations must recognise the context in which they take place and the wider European and global geopolitical opportunities and challenges.
