Walk the streets with us between 1914 and 1918 as we follow in the footsteps of the brave recruits, the determined women, the convalescing wounded and the ‘enemy aliens’ of Wakefield. From the Recruiting Office to Clayton Hospital, there’s a tale to tell on every corner. Tales, which by sharing with you, we hope to keep alive in the hearts of those who love Wakefield as much as we do.
We’ll include footprints of buildings long gone, hospitals barely standing, schools, blue plaques and maybe even a wartime recipe for you to enjoy. Join us to honour the men and women of The Great War the only way we know how, by remembering.
An entirely volunteer led Dream Time Creative Production, our walks are delivered by women passionate about his and herstory, who have infectious enthusiasm for storytelling, an interest in the legacy of our ancestors, a dramatic flair when delivering and look great in historical costumes.
Your tour will start promptly and we kindly ask that you arrive 5 to 10 minutes before the start time. You will find us on Westgate outside Pemberton House, opposite the Elephant and Castle public house. You can also find us using what3words sang.sings.fields
This is an outdoor event and will take place whatever the weather. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear suitable for city walking. This is a summer tour, you might want to think about bringing a hat and a bottle of water.
The walk will last approximately 90 minutes, but please allow up to 2 hours. We like to allow sufficient time for photos and questions.
Raising funds for Blue Plaques for Women
This event is one of a series of walks and talks , all being done to raise money for blue plaques for women. Did you know that each new plaque costs £700 - £800 There are currently more than 33 plaques with dedicated female names in Wakefield, which makes us the top city in the UK to recognise our Forgotten Women BUT there are lots more women whose stories need to be told and acknowledged. Hear about some of them on the tour and help us to raise the much needed funds for our next plaque.
Learn more about the Forgotten Women of Wakefield project and see how important it is that women are recognised for their achievements, and help Wakefield to become the first city with true blue plaque parity
