Wake County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council Community Listening Session
The Wake County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council invites community members, parents and caregivers, young people, educators, service providers, law enforcement and other community stakeholders to participate in a Community Listening Session on October 15, 2026.
The purpose of this session is to hear directly from the community about the needs, strengths, challenges and risks affecting young people in Wake County. The Council is particularly interested in understanding what young people and families are experiencing in their communities, what resources and supports are currently available, where gaps may exist, and what additional approaches could help promote the safety, well-being and positive development of young people.
This conversation is especially timely as our community continues to discuss recent large gatherings involving teenagers, including so-called “Teen Takeover” events, as well as questions surrounding youth curfews and other approaches to maintaining safe and welcoming communities. The Listening Session is intended to provide an opportunity for community members and stakeholders to share their perspectives, experiences and recommendations as these broader conversations continue.
The Council welcomes a range of perspectives. Participants will be encouraged to consider questions such as:
- What are the most significant needs facing young people in Wake County today?
- What factors may place young people at greater risk of becoming involved in delinquent or harmful behavior?
- What strengths, resources and positive opportunities are available to young people and families in our communities?
- Where are there gaps in services, activities, prevention efforts or other supports?
- What can families, schools, community organizations, businesses, law enforcement and government do together to better support young people?
- What approaches are most likely to promote both youth safety and positive relationships between young people and the broader community?
The Council's goal is to listen, learn and better understand the perspectives of those who live, work and serve in Wake County. Information shared during the session will help inform the Council's ongoing efforts to identify community needs, strengthen prevention strategies and support effective approaches to juvenile crime prevention.
Community members and stakeholders are encouraged to attend and share their perspectives. All voices are welcome, including the voices of young people themselves.
