There is a change of plans! Witches Book Club WA is going to the cinema! ✨📚
For our third gathering, we are doing something a little different. Since Practical Magic 2 is coming to the big screen, it feels like the perfect opportunity to combine books, cinema, and witches.
This time, Witches Book Club WA will be meeting at a cinema somewhere South of the River to watch Practical Magic 2 together.
We will gather on Saturday, 12 September 2026. The exact time and location will be announced as soon as the cinema tickets go on sale. As always, all details will be sent via private message. Please note that everyone will need to purchase their own cinema ticket.
A little about the story behind the film: Alice Hoffman is the author of the beloved Owens family series. Her novel Practical Magic inspired the classic film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Gods only know how many witches took their first magical steps because of that film, with Midnight Margaritas becoming a beloved tradition at many gatherings.
The series follows the Owens family, who just happen to be witches. The first novel, Practical Magic, tells the story of sisters Sally and Gillian Owens as they struggle with a family curse that claims the lives of the men they love. The second novel, The Rules of Magic, travels back in time to explore the youth of the magical aunts, Franny and Jet. The third, Magic Lessons, goes back even further to tell the story of Maria Owens, where the family legend and the curse first began. Finally, the fourth and final novel, The Book of Magic, brings the story full circle and concludes the tale of the Owens family.
The new film is inspired by the final novel, The Book of Magic. Let us read it together before our gathering, discover what becomes of the Owens family, and then see how director Susanne Bier has brought the story to the screen.
If you have never read the series before, I strongly recommend watching the original Practical Magic film before starting the final book. It will make the characters and family much easier to follow.
After the film, we will gather for coffee and have plenty to discuss. How faithful is the adaptation? Which scenes capture the spirit of the book? What has the film changed, and do those changes work?
