In typical Valley Vertical Tour style, this run group run is open to anyone of any speed who's comfortable running ~ 6 miles on trails. It features a beautiful view, a 1.9 mile ascent workout, and plenty of relaxed running with the group. The Route:
We’ll run as a group from the Harper’s Ferry train station to the Maryland Heights trailhead. The time trial portion begins at the trailhead & follows a 1.9 mile ascent to the Stone Fort. This climb is ~1,200’ and is very steep in some places. We will re-group at the top & then descend to the Maryland Heights overlook to view Harpers Ferry and the Potomac & Shenandoah Rivers before continuing on to the bottom and back to the train station. The total run will be about 6.5 miles with opportunities for extra miles on the C&O canal. Runners may also cut off ~ 2 miles by parking at the trailhead instead of the train station. The route features a footbridge across the Potomac, dirt towpath, and some rocky technical trail.
How we do it:
With the exception of the “workout” ascent portion of this run, we will travel as a group. For the 1.9 mile ascent, we self-stagger the start so that everyone will reach the top around the same time. It will take people 25-45 minutes to reach the top, so plan to start according to where you fall on that spectrum. For the trip back we will run as a group at a social pace, most likely in a couple different packs according to speeds. Everyone is encouraged to join no matter how fast or slow you think you are! The idea is for everyone to get a workout at their ability level and then enjoy a cool down together on the trails!
