Volunteering and Ecopoetry Workshop at Whitworth Park

As a part of our ongoing schedule of nature activities at the Whitworth, City of Trees invites you to make some paths with us! To make this corner of the park more accessible, we’ll tidy up any fallen branches, prune any trees with obstructive growth and follow desire lines to make the park a safer green space for everyone to enjoy.

We’ll also undergo other maintenance activities such as weeding, pruning, litter picking, bramble bashing and meadow management, depending on what’s most needed on the day. Tools and gloves will be provided but please bring appropriate clothing and footwear for the activity and weather. All ages and abilities are welcome.

After 2 hours of site work, we'll hand over to Tom Branfoot, Manchester Cathedral writer-in-residence, for a creative writing workshop exploring ecopoetry:

In this one-hour workshop, we will be writing poetry which interrogates the relationships between humans and the natural world, which contains both the commonplace and elusive, which captures an encounter with wildness and what that means in our post-industrial, technological, and administrative age. All are welcome, regardless of experience in creative writing. An interest in nature and environment is preferable. Please bring writing implements and materials.

Transport: There is very limited parking around Whitworth Park with a small amount of street parking along the park boundaries. There is a very small private car park on Acomb Street, M15 6FQ called Greenheys Community Car Park which can be used.

There is a bus stop on Oxford Road immediately beside Whitworth Park with multiple services running throughout the day. The nearest train station is Oxford Road a 24 min walk from the park.
