According to an article in the Detroit News, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera arrived at Michigan Central, Detroit, on April 21, 1932. Most observances will occur on Friday, April 25th, 2025.
April 21, 1932: Rivera and wife Frida Kahlo arrive at Detroit's Michigan Central Depot, greeted by reporters and fans. Rivera has been commissioned by Edsel Ford, president of Ford Motor Co., to create two murals that will celebrate Detroit manufacturing.
A team of community leaders and Mexicantown Organizations aim to observe this arrival with art, food, lectures and a pageant recreating that exciting arrival to the beloved train station. We are hoping to engage schools, businesses and community members in celebrating the experience of Frida and Pablo in Detroit. We hope that many Detroiters will share the spirit of the day by painting like Frida and Diego.
Imagined as part of the Detroit Arrivals series, we hope to observe the arrival of notable guests who came to Detroit's Michigan Central to make a home. Like Frida and Pablo, Jack Kerouac and Edie Parker first stepped off a train at Michigan Central in September 1944.
