Dr. Fawn Daphne Plessner is an Associate Professor at Emily Carr University of Art & Design, where she teaches across the Faculty of Art, Faculty of Culture + Community, and Graduate Studies. She holds a BA (Hons) in Philosophy from Birkbeck College, University of London, and a PhD in Art & Politics from Goldsmiths, University of London.
Plessner is an interdisciplinary artist whose work has been exhibited internationally since 1989 in solo and group exhibitions across the UK, Europe, and the United States. Her early training includes studying painting at ECUAD and the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, Germany, under Fluxus artist Robin Page.
Since 2008, her art practice has focused on formats and mediums such as newspapers, podcasts, writing, drawing, and sound, and combines research, narrative, and political analysis to produce public art interventions and research-based curatorial projects. Her work examines land and animal ownership, human–animal relations and urbanization, and more-than-human political membership. Her practice-based doctoral research explored the emergence of “citizen art” and her book, Doing Politics with Citizen Art (Bloomsbury, 2022), assesses 1: how artists perform modes of non-status citizenship, 2: the intersection of membership, speciesism and colonial land appropriation, and 3: Indigenous governance that recognizes animals as political agents. Plessner’s curatorial practice (the Near Dwellers project) focuses on animal-human relationships, with a particular interest in the impact of urbanization.
