Visit the Birthplace of Canadian Design

Discover the historic Arts and Letters Club at our open house event, as part of Design Week at A & L; enjoy self-guided tours and special installations by Club members. Founded in 1908, the Club is a vibrant social hub dedicated to the appreciation and celebration of the arts, including architecture, drawing, film, literature, music, painting, sculpture, and theatre.

The Club is located in St. George’s Hall, a Toronto landmark, which has a lively history of remarkable colour and vivacity. The building was built by the St. George’s Society in 1891 to the designs of Edwards and Webster with subsequent alterations made by Sproatt and Rolph in the 1920s.

During your visit, explore the Club’s permanent art collection, which features works by the renowned Group of Seven and other artists spanning over a century. Enjoy a rare glimpse into Canada’s graphic art history through the Club’s annual executive lists, and view the current exhibition showcasing works by Club artists. Friendly Club members will be on hand to share insights and answer questions.

Take a moment to soak in the atmosphere with a drink from the bar (available for purchase) while enjoying complimentary light snacks.
