Join the Virginia 52 Hike Challenge, led by Hiking With The Bear, as we take on one of the most exciting and rugged trails in the DMV, Billy Goat Trail Section A at Great Falls, Maryland.

About the Hike
Before we take on Billy Goat Trail, we’ll make our way out to Olmsted Island and the Great Falls Overlook for a chance to take in some incredible views of Great Falls and the Potomac River.
After that, it’s time to get rugged.
Billy Goat Trail Section A is approximately 1.75 miles one way and is known for rocky terrain, boulders, narrow passages, scrambling, climbing, and incredible views overlooking Mather Gorge and the Potomac River.
One of the signature challenges of Section A is the famous rock wall, also known as The Traverse. This section requires you to use your hands and feet as you work your way across and up the rock face. Good footing, patience, and paying attention to the trail are important.
This is not your typical walk through the woods. Expect to climb over rocks, maneuver through rugged sections, and earn those views.
Come Prepared
Please arrive prepared with your 11 Essentials, plenty of water, snacks, and the proper footwear for rugged terrain.
We will be practicing Leave No Trace throughout the entire hike. Stay on the designated trail, respect the environment and wildlife, and pack out everything you bring in.
