What is a fantasy in music—a form, or a freedom shared between performers? This program explores the many shades of the fantastical through works that stretch beyond convention and invite a sense of spontaneity and dialogue. At its center is Fantasia in C major for Violin and Piano by Franz Schubert, a work of unfolding imagination whose shifting moods feel almost improvised, as if discovered in the moment between violin and piano.
The serene lyricism of Romance No. 2 in F major, Op. 50 by Ludwig van Beethoven opens the program with a single melodic voice that gently expands into Schubert’s freer, more expansive world. From there, Violin Sonata in E-flat major by Paul Hindemith and the passionate Scherzo from the F.A.E. Sonata by Johannes Brahms reveal fantasy through contrast, interplay, and the energy of musical exchange—whether between instruments or between composers themselves.
The program closes with the intimate dreamscape of Nocturne-Serenade by Pablo de Sarasate, where virtuosity becomes a shared act of storytelling.
Together, these works suggest that fantasy is not only imagination, but collaboration—music unfolding in real time, shaped by listening, responding, and creating together.
