About this Event
On July 10, 2024, the United Arab Emirates sentenced 43 academics and human rights defenders who demanded reforms during the "Arab Spring" under the UAE's counterterrorism laws.
The use of counterterrorism legislation and policies to curb freedom, democracy, and human rights by authoritarian regimes, dictatorships, and “illiberal democracies” is a growing phenomenon that is posing an incremental threat to the survival of democratic institutions and safeguards for human dignity in all regions of the world.
The Cardozo Law Institute in Holocaust and Human Rights (CLIHHR) and the Montreal Institute for Global Security (MIGS)--along with Avaaz, the NYC Bar Association, American Society of International Law, Fordham International Law Association and the NYU Student's Association in Global Affairs and the Cardozo International Law Society-- are hosting a panel and set of academic presentations to analyze this country-specific situation and the potential application of international legal countermeasures that may induce the State to halt its repressive and grossly abusive practices.
