A self‑taught artist shaped by the beliefs and folklore of South Louisiana, Sonnier expands hisearly fascination with religious symbolism into a broader examination of American and
Cajun/Creole duality. His work—crafted through a mix of traditional techniques and politically
charged materials—invites viewers to confront the layered truths and mythologies that define the
South.
BYRON SONNIER
A self taught artist born and raised in a Cajun and Catholic family in South Louisiana, Byron
Sonnier grew up immersed in an environment where faith, folklore, craft, and cultural identity
intersected daily. Early exposure to Catholic iconography sparked a lifelong fascination with
religious symbols, a curiosity that expanded as he encountered other belief systems along with
regional and national traditions outside of his home state. That duality—being both American
and Cajun/Creole—continues to shape his life, world view and visual language.
Blending religious motifs, cultural memory, and personal experience, his work seeks to peel back
the layered narratives and contradictions of Southern Mythology. Using traditional craft paired
with unconventional and sometimes politically sensitive materials, he creates work that is both
familiar and thought provoking.
