Every year at 11am on 11 November—the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month—we pause to remember those who have served and those who have died in all wars and peacekeeping operations.
This year on Remembrance Day, the Shrine of Remembrance marks it's 90th birthday. For nine decades, the Shrine has been the home of commemoration and remembrance for the Victorian community. It is a reminder of the fragility of peace and the cost of conflict, as well as a testament to the fortitude, courage and generosity of those who serve all of us.
The Shrine's architecture plays a pivotal role on Remembrance Day. At exactly 11am, the Ray of Light illuminates the word “Love” on the Stone of Remembrance in the Sanctuary, symbolising the exact moment the Armistice was signed to end the First World War. The general public can view this again at midday.
