Join us as Jonathan Schaeffer of Synsira Software Solutions presents on the role of games in the AI research & development process.
Building game-playing programs capable of challenging the best human players was one of AI's initial grand challenge problems. It is now 70 years since the field of AI began, and many of AI's successes to date have involved games.
Games continue to play an important role as an experimental test bed for creating and testing new research ideas. You might be surprised to discover that many popular technologies in use today have a direct or indirect tie to game-related research. In this talk, the pivotal role of games in AI research will be discussed.

About the Presenter:
Jonathan Schaeffer is the co-founder and CEO of Synsira Software Solutions (synsira.com) which produces private AI for your desktop. He is co-founder of Onlea (onlea.org), which specializes in creating engaging online learning experiences. He was an academic for 40 years in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta.
His research is in artificial intelligence, and he is well known for demonstrating his research using games. His checkers-playing program Chinook was the first computer to win a human world championship (1994) in any game, a feat recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records.
