We are thrilled to be joined by Dave De Angelis for our next meeting on the 17th of July! As usual our meeting will be at the Victoria Hotel in Yarraville and we will kick things off at 7.15pm. A little bit about our guest speaker:
Dave is a zoological consultant and environmental educator with a background in ecological land management. He is particularly interested in the conservation and ecology of reptiles and frogs, having surveyed and written management plans for several threatened species in parts of southern and central Victoria.
Dave’s talk will be split into two parts and will focus on the following topics:
Part one:
Rethinking habitat management for some of Victoria's threatened reptiles and frogs
Our understanding of the types of habitats used by threatened frogs and reptiles is increasingly evolving. In some cases, assumptions about the best way to manage revegetation, W**d control and fire can result in poorer outcomes for local populations. Dave will explain why habitat structure and the history of land disturbance are often more important for the survival of threatened reptiles and frogs than whether the plants they live among are native or introduced. He will also discuss some of the difficulties managing populations that are increasingly being recognised as living in habitats that might otherwise be perceived as being too highly disturbed, polluted or weedy.
Part two:
Microhabitat selection and activity by the Desert Skink (Liopholis inornata) in the fire-affected Murray Mallee.
After the break, Dave will briefly talk about his recently revisited honours project completed over a decade ago, looking at how fire influences habitat for and the behaviour of the Desert Skink. The study took place at Birdlife Australia's Gluepot Reserve in South Australia.
