This October we are hosting Shackleton - Veterinary Physiotherapy to deliver this incredible CPD opportunity to industry professionals and students. New for 2024: specialist vet physio CPD for treating exotic animals!
Specialist zoo and exotics physiotherapists, authors and CPD providers Shackleton Veterinary Physiotherapy are running an exciting new exotics treatment course for vet physios. Developed to meet CPD requirements for insurance regulations for exotics treatment, this course will provide vet physios with the knowledge and practical skills to treat exotic animals including rabbits, reptiles and commonly kept exotic mammals ethically and effectively.
In partnership with Askham Bryan Wildlife and Conservation Park, this course will be held at the brand-new, top-class facilities at Askham Bryan University Centre near York. Housing over 100 different species of animals in specialised habitat areas (including a tropical house, exotic mammal room, nocturnal room, farm park, and zoo enclosures), this facility is ideal for allowing attendees to experience working with a large variety of exotic species.
There will also be a further advanced two-day workshop, for those who have completed this course and want to develop their skills and knowledge further. Dates and more information to be announced soon.
The need for exotics treatment CPD
Physiotherapy is continuing to evolve and develop in the veterinary field and becoming an increasing part of animal treatment plans. There are a diverse range of animals that a therapist could encounter and having an insight to their history, anatomy, management, and behaviour is vital for vet physios to work ethically and effectively.
However, there is currently a knowledge gap between the exotic/zoo industry and vet physios, which limits development within the respective industries and limits the efficacy of exotics physiotherapy. Exotic animal professionals are unaware of the importance and the level of expertise required to be vet physios, and there are numerous examples of poorly-implemented ‘physiotherapy’ being carried out by untrained zoo staff or exotic pet owners.
Similarly, domestic animal vet physios are often unaware of the management, training strategies and specialist care many species require. This is fundamental to exotic species’ recovery, and the usual handling and treatment used for domestic animals can be contraindicated in exotic animals due to their physiology, pathology, and the impact of stress in non-domesticated animals and/or prey species.
Course topics
This course will allow attendees to develop knowledge and skills in the ethical and safe treatment of exotic species, and will cover common pathologies, contraindications, and stress-free treatment. Further, it will help to lay the broader foundations in management and world class care e.g. co-operative care, training techniques, environmental parameters, taxonomic variation, husbandry considerations, behavioural implications and their importance in rehabilitation.
