☀️ On February 20, please join us for the vernissage of 𝙎𝙝𝙩𝙚𝙩𝙡 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙪𝙣, our winter exhibition featuring the vibrant works of Andy Sweet and Jonah Strub.
In the late 1970s, more than 20,000 elderly Jews, many of them Holocaust survivors and transplants from the Tri-state area or Canada, lived in South Beach, Florida – the storied Miami neighbourhood nestled between Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
𝙎𝙝𝙩𝙚𝙩𝙡 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙪𝙣, on loan from the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU, lovingly captures the ferocious strangeness of this place through the eyes of Andy Sweet, one of the most dynamic young American photographers of the late 1970s. Photographed between 1977 and 1980, Sweet’s work showcases a distinct aesthetic and cultural moment in South Beach.
On view in Canada for the first time, the Museum of Jewish Montreal has put 𝙎𝙝𝙩𝙚𝙩𝙡 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙪𝙣, in conversation with the tongue-in-cheek sculptures of Canadian contemporary ceramicist Jonah Strub. Irreverent, extravagant, and kitsch, Strub’s figures appear to be taken straight from the candy-coloured scenes caught on film by Sweet. Together, the works highlight an emblematic and instantly recognizable North American Jewish phenomenon and figure – the Snowbird – whose vibrancy resonates across time, regions, and generations.

ACCESSIBILITY: Our building is not currently accessible to visitors with limited mobility. This exhibition takes place on the second and third floors of our building, which are accessible via stairwell only.

𝙎𝙝𝙩𝙚𝙩𝙡 𝙖𝙪 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙚𝙞𝙡, prêtée par le Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU, saisit affectueusement la féroce étrangeté de ce quartier sous le regard d’Andy Sweet, un des jeunes photographes américains les plus talentueux de la fin des années 70. Pris entre 1977 et 1980, les images de Sweet illustrent une esthétique distincte et un moment culturel de South Beach.
Pour la grande première au Canada de 𝙎𝙝𝙩𝙚𝙩𝙡 𝙖𝙪 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙚𝙞𝙡, le Musée du Montréal juif propose une confrontation avec les sculptures espiègles du céramiste contemporain canadien Jonah Strub. Irrévérencieux, extravagants et kitsch, les personnages de Strub semblent sortis tout droit des décors bonbon du film Sweet. Les œuvres de ces deux artistes mettent en lumière ce phénomène emblématique des juifs nord-américains, le snowbird, qui traverse le temps, les régions et les générations.
Entrée libre. Des rafraîchissements complémentaires seront disponibles et notre bar (payable par carte uniquement) sera ouvert avec des boissons alcoolisées et non alcoolisées.
ACCESSIBILITÉ : Notre bâtiment n'est actuellement pas accessible aux visiteurs à mobilité réduite. Cette exposition se déroule aux deuxième et troisième étages de notre bâtiment, qui sont accessibles uniquement par une cage d'escalier.
