‘Headless Palms’ is the first solo show by Iranian artist Samira Hodaei (*1981, Tehran, Iran) at Valerius Gallery. The exhibition presents the artist’s latest series, Headless Palms of Arvand Kenar, exploring the complex relationship between the date palm and the people of southern Iran. By depicting headless palms—vital to the region's culture, economy, and spirituality—the artist highlights their significance. Set in Arvand Kenar, a region scarred by the Iran-Iraq war, the series reflects the lasting impact of the conflict on both the land and its people. Growing up in Khuzestan during the war, Hodaei witnessed the shift from lush landscapes to barren ones, inspiring her to portray the palms as silent witnesses to this destruction. More than just landscape depictions, Hodaei’s work is a reflection on loss, resilience, and the intertwined histories of humanity and nature.
Hodaei’s works have been part of solo and group exhibitions in Europe, United States, United Arab Emirates, Asia and Australia. Recent exhibitions have been at Konschthal, Esch-sur-Alzette, LU (2024), Saarländische Galerie, Berlin, DE; Saarland Museum, Saarbrücken, DE (2024); Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, DE (2023).
The exhibition runs from 03 April until 10 May 2025.
