She is also the creator of The Dream a Dream Project, an award-winning initiative bringing Butoh into correctional facilities throughout New York State for nearly two decades.
Her choreography has been presented across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and she has received numerous honours, including two National Endowment for the Arts Dance Awards for her groundbreaking work exploring the relationship between Butoh and neuroscience.
Vangeline is the author of the acclaimed book Butoh: Cradling Empty Space and led the first scientific study measuring the effects of Butoh on the brain. Her work has been featured by The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, CNN, the BBC, and numerous international festivals and universities including Princeton, NYU, Cornell, Duke, and Sarah Lawrence College.

Hosted by London Butoh Dance Company & Posthuman Theatre
Saturday, 19 September
3:30 PM – 8:30 PM
Walworth Town Hall, London
London Butoh Dance Company and Posthuman Theatre are delighted to welcome internationally renowned Butoh artist Vangeline to London for an immersive five-hour workshop exploring The Art of Receiving.
Rooted in Japanese Butoh and informed by contemporary neuroscience and somatic practice, this workshop investigates how receptivity can become a powerful creative and transformative force. Participants will explore the relationship between movement, perception, and the nervous system through Butoh and Noguchi Taiso (Noguchi Gymnastics): a movement practice that emphasizes fluidity, softness, and effortless motion.
A central focus of the workshop is activating the parasympathetic nervous system, encouraging states of rest, regulation, and presence. By releasing unnecessary muscular effort, participants can experience greater freedom of movement, emotional openness, and creative responsiveness.
Rather than striving or controlling movement, this practice invites you to receive, listen, and allow movement to emerge naturally, opening new possibilities for artistic expression and embodied awareness.
