About the Callers :
QWILL DUVALL discovered contra dancing when they moved to Chicago in 2015, drawn by its welcoming, intergenerational community, culture of dancing both roles, and the joy of connecting with everyone in the room. Qwill brings an upbeat, playful energy to every dance, making the experience both welcoming and exciting. With clear, relaxed teaching and an eye for the skill level in the room, they keep dancers engaged — whether with creative choreography, unusual figures, or simply a well-chosen, satisfying dance. Expect a fun, inclusive atmosphere where beginners feel supported, experienced dancers stay intrigued, and everyone leaves smiling.
The JANINE SMITH experience is what you get when you cross a howdy-ma’am-BBQ-and-beans Honky Tonk with Zoom contra and sprinkle on some twinkly lights for sass. She’ll bring you a night of fun dances, from squares to contras, heck maybe a Singing Square, whether you’re sitting, standing, or somewhere in between. Her teaching is clear and to-the-point, though she has been known to goof around a bit.
About the Bands:
RIVER ROAD is a vibrant trio rooted in New England, blending the timeless spirit of traditional folk with a fresh, contemporary energy. Their music flows with the elegance of Sarah-Hadley’s fiddle, the rich textures of Kristen’s piano, flute, and accordion and the anchoring of Jesse’s mandolin, guitar, and foot percussion. Whether drawing in dancers or enchanting listeners, River Road’s music is a captivating journey, steeped in tradition.
NORTHWOODS is a Boston-based contra dance band that brings a seamless blend of unstoppable groove, infectious melodies, and boundless energy to the dance floor.
Featuring Casey Murray on guitar and cello, Molly Tucker on fiddle, and Sam Zakon-Anderson on piano, the band approaches contra dance music with a balance of tradition and innovation.
Their styles intertwine effortlessly, creating a groove that keeps dancers engaged from the first downbeat to the final note of the night.
We look forward to hosting the first night of a regional Thanksgiving Contra Dance Weekend!
