WORLD PREMIERE John Williams, Serenade for Horn and Strings

This program sparkles with invention and contrast: the stormy brilliance of C.P.E. Bach, the crystalline craftsmanship of Stravinsky, Britten’s haunting Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings, and John Williams’ Serenade for Horn and Strings. Mr. Williams (E.T. and Star Wars) was a family friend of Jesse Clevenger’s and wrote this piece in memory of Jesse’s mother after she passed
away in 2011.
We’re thrilled to feature two radiant artists—tenor Salvatore Atti and horn player Jesse Clevenger—whose poetic sensitivity and luminous sound will bring Britten’s nocturnal vision vividly to life. Haydn’s “Miracle” Symphony closes the program with trademark wit and charm.
Award winning tenor, Salvatore Atti, and alumni of the Merola Opera program is delighted to make his debut at Vallejo Symphony. Mr. Atti performed in the Schwabacher summer concert series and the grand finale, singing Edgardo in “Lucia di Lammermoor” and Leiceste in “Maria Stuarda.” Mr. Atti performed with Cincinnati Opera in “Blind Injustice” as the principal role of defense attorney. He also participated in the workshop performance of “If I Were You” by Jake Heggie. Mr. Atti has performed with Sacramento philharmonic and Opera,
Auburn Symphony, Music in the Mountains, Mendocino Music Festival, Bear Valley music festival, Auburn Symphony, West Bay Opera, New Rochelle Opera, Berkeley Chamber Opera, and Boston Opera Collaborative. Mr. Atti has performed internationally in Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Italy. He had the honor of participating in Verdi’s bicentennial celebration during which he sang Alfredo in “La Traviata' at the Verdi opera house in Busseto, Italy.
A Chicago Native, Jesse Clevenger comes from a musical family of horn players. He joined the San Francisco Symphony in 2023 and for eight seasons has been the Sun Valley Music Festival’s Assistant Principal. Previously, he was the Houston Symphony’s Interim Assistant Principal for seven seasons. Mr. Clevenger has appeared as a guest performer with the Chicago Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, and as guest Principal of the Baltimore and Toledo Symphonies. Additionally, he has participated in many festivals including Tanglewood, Spoleto, and Bravo! Vail.
