The UCD announces they have officially opened a newly renovated space that will now house the Coach Wilson’s Cops and Kids program. The Coach Wilson's Cops and Kids Program now occupies the space adjacent to the gymnasium on the second floor of the former YMCA building in Utica. This is a highly frequented program for youth 8 to 18 years of age. Although opened to everyone, this program sees a high number of at-risk inner-city youth.Operated by members of the Utica Police Department in order to carry on the great work started by Coach Wilson so many years ago. This program is about more than boxing. It is about discipline, mental and physical strength building, health lifestyle choices, self-esteem, civic pride, and so much more. The program is offered 6 nights a week and has around 40 participants a night.
For years, this program has been shuffled around from one inadequate facility to the next. The UCD has invested over $300,000.00 in remolding sections of its building to provide a forever home to this program. All programs offered to Youth at the UCD are FREE.
“The UCD is very proud of its work and would like to showcase it for the community. Its these kinds of projects that set the UCD apart from other developers, we are able to accomplish our core mission while at the same time providing our community with much needed community space for all to use, UCD’s founder and Executive Director Vincent Scalise stated. "The UCD accomplishes this through taking properties that no one else wanted and puts them back in productive use. “
