USk Sarasota Sketch Out at Venice Beach Pavilion
Join Urban Sketchers Sarasota for a morning of sketching at one of Venice's most recognizable architectural landmarks and beloved gathering places!
📅 Date: Sunday, July 26, 2026
🕥 Time: 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM
📍 Venice Beach Pavilion, 101 The Esplanade, Venice, Florida
This month's sketch outing takes us to the iconic Venice Beach Pavilion for a distinctive example of Florida architecture. The pavilion's dramatic sweeping roofline has become one of Venice's most photographed structures and a defining feature of the city's beachfront. The Venice Beach Pavilion has a hyperbolic paraboloid shape, which is a continuous, flowing, double-curved surface used mainly in concrete skin roofs. It appears wing-like in one elevation and as an arch from the opposite side.
The pavilion was designed to create a building that responded to Florida's climate through open-air design, shade, natural ventilation, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. The Venice Beach Pavilion reflects these principles beautifully, combining sculptural form with practical function. With minimum ground supports, this dynamic roof geometry appears to defy gravity.
The Pavilion was built in 1963 and dedicated in 1964. It was added to the Venice Register of Historical Resources in 2025.
Sketchers will find no shortage of subjects:
• The pavilion's distinctive curved roof and geometric supports
• Expansive Gulf of Mexico views
• Palm trees and coastal vegetation
• Beachgoers and recreational activity
• Lifeguard huts and beach infrastructure
• Light, shadow, and reflections throughout the structure
This location is particularly appealing during the summer months because the pavilion provides ample shade, seating, and cooling Gulf breezes while still offering panoramic views and excellent sketching opportunities.
Whether you enjoy architecture, landscapes, people sketching, or capturing the atmosphere of a place, you'll find plenty of inspiration here. Artists of all skill levels are welcome—from complete beginners to experienced sketchers.
What to Bring:
• Your favorite sketching supplies
• A portable chair if desired
• Water and sun protection
• A sketchbook ready for adventure
We'll gather near the pavilion at 10:30 AM for a brief welcome before spreading out to sketch. At the conclusion of the event, we'll come together to share our drawings and celebrate the many ways we each see the same place.
As always, Urban Sketchers Sarasota follows the Urban Sketchers motto:
"We show the world, one drawing at a time."
Parking is free. Bring a friend and join us for a morning of sketching, architecture, and Gulf Coast beauty.
