Urban Photography: Cityscape/Landscape with Sally Apfelbaum

Join artist Sally Apfelbaum for a series of photography workshops designed for beginners and people looking for ways to enliven their photos, using a smartphone or camera. Some topics we’ll consider include composition, angle of view, available light, nature in New York City. Explore outdoor locations in the East Village, share your work and receive feedback along the way. Take one workshop or all 3! Students of these workshops will participate in a showing/sharing of their work at the 14Y.

Workshop 1: Fundamentals of Composition | Wednesday, May 22

A brief overview of composition and techniques for photographing our surroundings. Class time includes going over basic principles of composition and walking to several nearby outdoor sites to photograph, where we'll try out our new techniques and perspectives. We’ll start with a trip to the rooftop at the Y!

Workshop 2: Nature and the City | Wednesday, June 26

We'll visit some of the important green spaces in our neighborhood, including Tompkins Square Park, and a local community garden, and consider how to photographically describe these constructed, very specific to New York landscapes. We'll discuss lighting, camera distance, public spaces - what they look like, how people use them.

Workshop 3: Cityscapes, Streetscapes, Architecture | Wednesday, July 24

This class looks at ways to describe the city, seeing the familiar with fresh eyes, and dynamic photographic perspectives. We'll walk to several streets and avenues for inspiration. We’ll talk about pairing photography techniques and camera choices with our subject matter, close-up and distance-camera views, and discovering and photographing the varied, vibrant landscape we inhabit.
