A journey to discover mosaic from its origins to the present day!
About this Event

A journey to discover mosaic from its origins to the present day, passing through the different techniques adopted over the various centuries and the different functions of the mosaic itself. Color theory will be introduced and also the various types of materials commonly used in mosaic and less common ones. Finally, a comparison will be made between artistic mosaic and artisanal mosaic studios.

Practical lesson to know the various cutting tools:

The tools and cutting techniques are various: they change based on the type of material (glass or natural material such as marble), its dimensions and its thickness. Students will therefore be able to familiarize themselves with the various tools: the particular hammer called “martellina”, the glass cutter, the tongs, the slice.

Projects development:

As a practical exercise the students will realize a group project and an individual one. Both of the projects will be realized with direct (positive) technique on the net.

The group project starts with the realization of an individual piece for each student. The individual pieces then put together will form a single and unique work. For this type of exercise I thought to make the students use the contemporary mosaic technique with glassy material combined with natural material such as pebbles. In this way students will be able to experience in practice the theory of color in mosaic.

For the individual project, students will have to use their imagination to create their own mosaic

taking inspiration from the city of New York.

Tour:

On Saturday, we will take a tour in the subways stations of the city to discover the mosaics made by Mayer of Munich.

Additional work time for intensive students: Students will also have access to additional hours in the flat shop, without instruction, on Tuesday - Sunday from 5-8pm - There will be no student hours on Saturday in lieu of the tour. Students must be able to work safely in the studio, and be able to set up their area without needing instruction. Students participating in student hours will need to be approved by the instructor and TA’s.

What to Expect: Clean-up time is included in the duration of class, and usually the last 20 minutes of class are dedicated to cleaning your workstation. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.

Mosaic work involves a mix of seated and standing activities. Handling glass and tools may require a certain level of dexterity. To learn more about accessibility the Accessibility page on our website.

Eligibility: No previous experience required. Open to ages 12 and up

This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration.

We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date of class. Contact our Registrar of Education, Ari Eshoo, at [email protected] if you have questions about the class or would like to arrange a payment plan.
