Join us for an inspiring morning exploring the future of urban greening and how we can help protect Western Australia’s iconic Black Cockatoos. This free community workshop brings together two leading experts for a thought‑provoking and practical look at how our suburbs can support biodiversity.
📌 Session 1 – Urban Greening (9.00am - 10.35am) Presented by Simon Blackwell, HIP V. HYPE
Discover the incredible social and environmental benefits of urban greening and why it matters for you, your family and the wider community.
From urban heat mitigation, habitat creation and long-term community wellbeing, Simon will explain how ‘not all urban greening is created equal’. He'll also unpack how both top-down city-scale strategies and bottom-up household actions can combine to create neighbourhoods which are cool, beautiful and full of nature.

📌 Session 2 – Creating Black Cockatoo Friendly Suburbs (11.00am - 12.25pm) Presented by Dr Christine Groom, author of Creating Black Cockatoo Friendly Suburbs
Learn about the threats facing Black Cockatoos, their habitat needs, and the role everyday suburban landscapes can play in their survival. Christine will offer insights from her research and book, Creating Black Cockatoo Friendly Suburbs (UWA Publishing, 2024), providing actionable steps you can take at home to implement in your own neighbourhood.

This event is part of the City’s bi‑annual Living Green Education Series, designed to support residents to take practical environmental action. The Autumn series runs from 18 March to 19 May and features workshops on energy, tree selection, and electrification.
