Please note: This workshop is designed for ages 13+. Participants under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Composting is one of the easiest and most effective ways to build healthier soil, reduce household waste, and support thriving gardens. In this workshop, participants will roll up their sleeves to explore different composting methods and learn how to create nutrient-rich compost at home.

Whether you're just getting started or looking to improve your backyard compost system, you'll leave with practical knowledge, hands-on experience, and materials to help your garden flourish.

• Healthy versus depleted soil
• Compost's role in regenerative soil health
• Static, thermophilic, and vermicomposting systems
• Compost recipes and maintenance tips
• Compost tea as a beneficial garden input

What to Expect:

• Hands-On Compost Building: Work together to build a thermophilic compost system capable of producing finished compost in approximately 6–8 weeks.
• Explore Three Composting Methods: Learn the basics of static composting, thermophilic composting, and vermicomposting.
• Garden-Ready Tips: Discover recipes and techniques for producing high-quality compost and maintaining a successful compost system.
• Compost Tea Demonstration: Learn how to make compost tea to support healthy soil biology and take home materials to get started.

Zawadi Farm will be running the session in partnership with the City of Mississauga. Zawadi Farm is a regenerative urban farm based in Toronto's Downsview Park dedicated to growing food, community, and dignity through sustainable agriculture. The farm combines no-till regenerative farming with hands-on education, helping people build stronger connections to healthy soil, local food systems, and environmental stewardship through engaging community workshops and training programs.
